Teacher: It’s a nice day today, isn’t it? What is the weather like? Is it foggy? Is it cloudy? Is it going to rain? Do you think it’s going to be a nice day? Do you like it when it rains? You know that the English people often begin talking about the weather when they meet each other. Let’s imagine that we are the Englishmen and make up some very short dialogues about the weather using the usual phrases that we have learnt. You’ve got a minute to get ready with them.
III.
Teacher: — Today we are going to speak about Great Britain, its geographical position, its political outlook, its people, its customs and traditions. We are going to revise everything we have learnt about Britain and of course you’ll learn some more information about the country the language of which we are learning.
But just before we start let’s do a number of phonetic exercises and practise the proper names you’ll make use of.
Teacher: — So Look at the words given on the board, and say after me:
- The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- The British Isles
- The Atlantic Ocean Scotland
- The North Sea England
- The Irish Sea Wales
- The English Channel Northern Ireland
- The Straight of Dover Edinburgh
- The Irish Republic Cardiff
- The Union Jack Belfast
- The Houses of Parliament Scottish
- The House of Lords Welsh
- The House of Commons Irish
- the British Government India
- the British Parliament Pakistan
- the Commonwealth Ceylon
- the British Empire
- a thistle; a daffodil (a leek); a shamrock
Teacher: Now that we’ve practised these proper names and trained our tongues, we can pass over to talking about Great Britain. Look at the board. Here is the map of the country, look at it attentively and say if Great Britain is a large state.
Yes, you are right, so let’s speak about the state.
- What is the official name of the country and how is it often called?
- What do you know about the geographical position of the UK? Use the map to show everything you are talking about.
- What countries does the UK consist of and what are their capitals?
- The people of what nationality live in Britain and what language do they speak?
- What large cities in Britain do you know?
- What is the important symbol of the UK? What do you know about the Union Jack?
- Who is the head of the state? Say what you know about the Queen and the royal family.
- What is the Commonwealth? How many countries does it include? Are these countries independent states now?
- We’ve said that the Queen does not rule the country as she has no real power. Who rules Britain and who does real power belong to?
Teacher: — Now I would like you to have a look at these photographs and see how beautiful the houses of Parliament are. These are the rooms where the British Parliament sits, and this the throne where the Queen sits when she arrives at the House of Lords once a year in November for the State Opening of Parliament. It’s a tradition in Britain and you know that it’s not the only tradition in the UK, because Great Britain is known to be the country full of customs and traditions, isn’t it?
III.
Teacher: — To learn even more about it I’d like you to listen to me very attentively now, as I am going to present some interesting information about British love for traditions and customs, and try to understand and remember as much as you can. After you have listened to the text we shall talk about it, so try not to miss the details. But before you listen to it look at the words given on the board and try to guess what they mean:
- stay-at-home people
- special
- a tea-room
- a dessert
- a fan
Teacher: — Now let’s practice the pronunciation of these words, so say after me.
Well, it’s time to get some new information about British ways. Put on your earphones and listen to the text very attentively.
We cannot speak about Britain without speaking about its traditions and customs because the British are very fond of them, proud of them and keep them up carefully. Traditions are very important in the life of people of the British Isles, so let’s learn about some of them.
First of all, the English are ‘stay-at-home people. ‘There is no place like home’, they say. When they are not at work they like to spend time at home with their families. The Englishmen like to live in small houses for one family with gardens around them, where they can grow flowers, different vegetables and fruit as they are fond of gardening. Besides, in many houses of Britain they have fireplaces, and though the rooms are sometimes cold enough, the people don’t want to use central heating because they don’t like changes and are fond of the open fire.
English meals are also traditional. The English usually have four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner, and they take them at regular hours. It’s well-known to everybody that traditional English breakfast consists of porridge or sausages, bacon and eggs, and toasts with marmalade, jam or honey. The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which people often have with milk. Tea is the favourite drink in England, and there is a special meal at 5 o’clock p.m. – ‘five o’clock tea’, when the Englishmen like to drink tea with sandwiches or cakes at special tea-rooms or at home. The evening meal is called ‘dinner’ in England , but not ‘supper’ as we call it. It’s the biggest meal of the day and it includes several dishes such as soup, fish, vegetables and dessert.
The English are a sports nation. They go in for different kinds of sport and are fond of playing tennis, golf, cricket themselves or watch them on TV or at the stadiums as they are great sports fans.
English people like animals very much and keep different pets at home – dogs, cats, birds, fish, mice and so on. The English treat pets as friends and the fact that there are special pets’ hospitals, hotels and shops where food for pets is sold shows that they are fond of them.
Teacher: — That’s it. Have you got the idea of the text? If you haven’t, it’ll be presented once again, and if you have, let’s discuss what we have learnt.
Listen to the statements and agree or disagree with them. If the statement is correct, add what you can about it, and if it isn’t true correct it and explain why you do not agree. Is the task clear? So let’ start – look at the board, read the statement, agree or disagree with it and explain why you do it.

Teacher: — Now take off the ear-phones and let’s have a talk. It’s very good that you have learnt about different traditions of the English people. But besides certain customs there are many traditional holidays that the English like to celebrate. So I guess it will be interesting to speak about them.
To make it more interesting and much quicker we shall not speak about them, as I am sure you remember everything perfectly well, but play the quiz-game. I will name some facts about this or that holiday and you will guess what it is and say when the holiday is celebrated. Let’s start.
- It’s a spring holiday when children get chocolate eggs and chocolate rabbits as presents.
- On this day people congratulate their mothers.
- On this day the Irish wear shamrock on their clothes.

I see that you’ve made nice Valentines for your nearest and dearest. Could you show them to us, and if it’s not a secret, read what you have written.
Well, they are nicely made and I hope that it’ll be most pleasant to get such a card on Valentine’s Day. Thank you, kids.

Teacher: — Now, as there’s some time left, let’s revise grammar. Here are some cards with the sentences on them. I shall not hand in the cards to each of you, you’ll choose them yourselves. Each of you will choose a card, read out the sentence in the direct speech and then report it.If you make a mistake other pupils will have to correct you, so be very attentive.
