Music
Author: Once there lived the Pope porridge-head. He is a miser, mean and greedy. He wants a servant but he is not prepared to pay.
So, he took his family to the marketplace one day, to look for some goods on the way.
And he came on Balda, who was there, who was going he didn’t know where.
Balda: Good morning, Sir. Why d’you look upset and have desease? May be I could help if you please?
Pope: For a workman I look, to be stableman, carpenter, cook. But where to procure such a servant, a cheap one, be sure?
Balda: I will come with you as a servant.
I’ll be splendid, punctual, fervent
And my pay for the year is three raps on the head.
Only give me boiled wheat when I’m fed.
Author: And he lives with the Pope.
He eats like four men.
He works like seven.
The sun is not up, but the work simply races.
The strip is all ploughed and the nag in the traces.
All is bought and prepared
The stove is heated
Then he bakes the egg and they eat it.
Popess: Oh, Balda
Daughter: Oh, Balda
Son: Tyatya (Тятя)
Author: But the Pope never blesses
Balda with his love and caresses.
He couldn’t eat, drink or sleep, for, alack
Already he feels on his forehead the crack.
Pope: What to do, my dear wife?
Popess: I’m so glad you should ask
You must set him some impossible task.
So, you forehead will never be punished I say
And you never will pay him but will send him away.
Pope (to Balda):
Now, listen, some devils have said
They will pay me a rent every year until I’m dead.
The income is all of the best.
But they have a debt for three years.
So, when you are fed up with your wheat
Collect from the devils my quit-rent complete.
Old Devil: Balda, I have come out
To ask you why are you hereabout?
And why, oh why are you so unkind?
I am vey upset in my mind.
Balda: Are you asking why? Have you
Forgotten the time when the rent was due?
Old Devil: Oh, dear Balda, let the sea stop wrinkling
And all the rent is yours in a twinkling.
I will send you my grandson – wait awhile…
Balda (произносит тихо и с усмешкой): He is enough to beguile.
Little devil: Good morning, Balda, my dear muzhik
Now tell me what is the rent you seek.
We never heard of you rent – that’s flat.
We, devils, have never had worries like that.
Yet, take it – no matter-on what condition?
Balda: Let’s see what thy strength is.
Look there!
At that little mare: (можно взять игрушечную лошадь)
I dare thee to lift her.
And half a mile shift her.
So, carry that mare, and the rent is thine.
But carry her not, and the whole is mine.
Balda: You, silly imp, between your arms you couldn’t rear her.
And see between my legs I’ll bear her.
Author: So, the devils collected the sack
And quickly loaded Balda’s neck.
Balda came back to the Pope to see
And started demanding his easiest fee.
Balda: Rap number one
Author: He jumped up to the ceiling.
Balda: Rap number 2.
Author: He lost his tongue’s feeling.
Balda: Rap number 3.
Author: He was battered and his wits were shattered.
Balda (обращается к попу с укоризной ): It wouldn’t have been
But for you such a mean.
