Text K.A. Savitsky.

Savitsky was born on the 6 th of June, 1844, in Taganrog, into the family of a military doctor. The boy was in poor health, and during the long time he had to spend in bed, he became fond of drawing. Kostya turned 15 when his parents died. His uncle sent him to a private boarding school.

By that time, the boy had definitely dreamed of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. At the age of eighteen, he left boarding school and entered the Academy as a volunteer. But Savitsky was not ready to study at the Academy, and he was transferred to the Drawing School. Savitsky recalled about his studies at this school that, in fact, he was on his own. To earn a living, he painted icons.

He returned to the Academy in 1867, and in a year he passed the first and second grade program and was immediately transferred to the third, full-scale. Savitsky studied well at the Academy and was awarded with five silver medals. In 1871, he received the Academy’s small gold medal for his painting «Cain and Abel.»He dreamed of a big gold medal, giving him the opportunity to continue his study in Europe. However, this did not work out–he was expelled from the Academy because he was too actively cooperating with the Traveling Exhibitions Association, and could not pass the exam on time.

At the Third traveling Exhibition, Savitsky’s painting «Repair Work on the Railway» was exhibited with great success. Pavel Tretyakov acquired the work, which gave the artist the opportunity to travel to Europe. In France, the first Impressionist exhibition was held in 1874. Savitsky was not close to the new direction, he was too peredvizhnik to become at least a little impressionist, but the environment had its influence. In his works of that period, there was a noticeable increased attention to the subtleties of transmitting the light-and-air environment.

Back in 1870, as a student at the Academy, Savitsky married Ekaterina Mitrokhina, a girl of progressive views. Alas, her advanced world view did not save her life: Katerina in 1875 committed suicide in Paris. The reason is not known but it is known that the artist was very upset by her death. From a letter to Ivan Kramskoy: «A terrible, terrible grief has befallen me, I have lost everything that I had best and dearest in the world.» Savitsky could not bear to stay in France, he returned to Russia and stayed with his sister. He gradually came to his senses there. During these years, he painted a lot and illustrated magazines. He was especially successful in depicting the difficult fate of peasants. Savitsky was even called «Nekrasov in painting.»

In 1880, he felt that he was healed enough to return to the big world, and settled in St. Petersburg. The artist was also blessed with personal happiness – at the age of 42 he married 19-year-old Valerie Dumoulin. Seven children were born in this marriage, the son George became a famous Soviet artist in the future (and here he is very young and seriously quarreled with his mother).

From the very moment of its creation, the Traveling Exhibitions Association occupied an essential place in Konstantin Savitsky’s life, and after moving to Moscow in 1891, he plunged into the affairs of the Peredvizhniki. He also conducted teaching activities, first at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and from 1897 at the Penza Art School, which he headed. At the same time, he received the title of academician from the Academy of Arts, which had been thoroughly reformed by that time. Savitsky worked n Penza until his death.

The artist did a lot for the Penza art school: he chose the teachers, equipped the workshops. He also made programs for courses. The Penza Art School became one of the best in Russia. Such famous artists as V. Tatlin, A. Lentulov, G. Savitsky studied here.

  1. Закрепление новых знаний.

Работа в малых группах.

Teacher :

You know that Savitsky painted a lot of canvases which are kept in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, in the State Tretyakov Art Gallery and other galleries. Now let`s look at one 0f his paintings, which is called “To the War’.

In this picture we see a scene of departing of recruits to the Russian-Turkish war, their parting with their families. The artist skillfully depicts his characters, subtly characterizes the images of people.

The other witnessed this scene himself and was greatly impressed by it.

  • What scene can we see in the foreground in the centre?
  • And to the left?
  • What unites them in one composition?

Now we` ll work in 3 groups. Each group will answer one of these questions. Use card 2 with the words, which will help you.

You have 3 min to prepare.

Предполагаемый ответ:

Student 1: in the centre in the foreground we see a young woman. She is crying and stretching her arms towards her husband-recruit. A woman standing near her supports her. Two friends take the man by his arms and make him go away. Going, he turns to his wife his pale, embarrassed face.

The scene is full of grief and dispare.

Student 2: One more scene in the foreground on the left.

F young woman also feels grief, but she tries not to show it, she restrains her tears. Her husband, a tall peasant with beard, holds her by her hand. He restrains deeply his grief in the hard minute of parting. His mother is crying on his chest, his father is standing close to him with his heard bent down.

The emotions are expressed by the author sincerely and deeply.

Student 3: I will speak about the composition of the picture as a whole.

In the composition the artist depicted the truthful scene with excitement. May be, he witnessed it himself. Here there are many people, united by common grief and agitation. Although every character is depicted individually, all of them feel grief at the moment of parting, may be forever. People know, that many recruits will never return.

The dark colour palette underlines the mood. The composition unites everything and makes the painting dynamic. It is an epic canvas. It belongs to the collection of the State Russian museum in St. Petersburg.
